Listen carefully to the recent paintings of Claude Carone and you will enter spaces the expand and contract like the spaces between galaxies. sometimes slowly, sometimes at a leap. Look carefully and you will hear ancient sounds and the reverberations of deep song. While wholly of the moment, much of the work resembles, by directness of mark on surface, nothing so much as the cave painting of pre-history. These paintings unfold in time, like music. The marks, like musical notes, are signposts for our imagination.
The synesthesia suggested in the show’s title is poetically appropriate for works whose correspondences provide a space for contemplation. The paintings are metaphysical. We move from the physicality of the material substance to the precise evocation of specific emotions. The range of feelings the artist is capable of conjuring reveals this precision. We move from “Earth’s Alarm” to” Heaven’s Hill”. All natural and artistic elements are evoked, and they become a keyboard on which the artist plays the full range of human experience.
